Looking for a little more order in your life? Why not start with something simple: your closets! There’s so much do here in Seattle; closet organization will free you up to take advantage of this fabulous city! And organizing is one home improvement task we can all do, no matter what our time limits or income.

At least once a year, it’s time: time to clean out and re-organize your closets. And, at least once a year, you wonder how your family collects enough stuff to bury the state of Washington in clutter, and if it’s possible to have enough closet space. Apparently, it is. Here are some items you’ll find in a top-of-the line custom closet.

Of all your home’s closets, the hall closet may be your greatest challenge. It’s the catch-all closet; every lost mitten in the state of Washington resides there, buried under shoes, sporting equipment, Christmas lights, umbrellas, pet leashes, hats and, oh yes, coats. You ask guests to put their wraps on your bed to save them from the clutter avalanche that occurs whenever anyone opens the hall closet door. For many families in Seattle, closet organization is a challenge, but not an insurmountable one. Here are some hints to help you get started. Who knows? You just might be able to find those missing mittens!

In groceries all over Washington, people are wasting time, money and fuel, driving to the store, shopping, and paying for groceries they don’t need. Why? Because they’re already in the pantry, hidden behind cereal boxes, under the bag of rice, or behind the army of water bottles. A messy bedroom closet is a stress-maker, but people don’t buy new clothes because they can’t find their jeans in the clutter. A disorganized pantry, however, costs extra money every week, not to mention the time you spend standing in that long line behind the woman with thirty price checks!

If you’re like most families in Tacoma, Bellevue, or anywhere in Seattle, closet organization is something you’d love to achieve. Considering buying a closet system? Here are some guidelines to help you make the best decision.

If you ask families all over Washington what they would like in their dream house, from Bellevue to Tacoma and beyond, most would say (after the gourmet kitchen and the fantasy bath): more storage! Less clutter means more peace of mind, and in Seattle, closet organization can mean more time with family, more time for hobbies, and more time to enjoy what the city has to offer. You can organize your closets for maximum efficiency with just a little time and money.

Seattle Closet Organization: Taming the Hall Closet

Seattle Closet Organization: Taming the Hall Closet

Clean it out!

Yeah, you’ve gotta do it. Set aside an afternoon to really focus on your hall closet. First, empty it out and clean it. When a closet is the repository for all sorts of outdoor wear, you’ll probably find leaves, grass, and pocket litter scattered on the floor. Next, sort the contents. You’ll probably find many items don’t belong there after all. Sports equipment can be sent to the basement or garage storage. Cleaning products should be placed in childproof cabinet storage and vacuums can also be given other homes. Rather than have shoes and boots jumbled together on the floor, store some in bedrooms or a mudroom. Make sure coats, jackets, and other wraps still fit. If they’re no longer used but still good, there are many charities in Seattle, Bellevue, and Tacoma who would welcome them.

Remodel Your Closet

Once you’ve got it cleared out, decide what you really want to put in your hall closet. Most have just a rod with a shelf above it.  For most families, this is probably insufficient. Your local Seattle closet organization, container, or home improvement retailer will have many products available to help you make the most of a small space. Try installing hooks on the side and back walls to hang bags, pet leashes, or children’s outerwear. Use plastic bins or stackable drawers for mittens, scarves and other accessories; label each with the owner’s name. Place a shoe rack on the floor. This can be a traditional rack, or stair-step storage shelves. Because many shoes in a small space can lead to odor problems, put a mesh bag of charcoal or a sachet in your closet to keep it smelling fresh. Make sure your coat hangers are adequate.  A very heavy winter coat can snap a plastic hanger; invest in a strong wooden set. Hang coats by size, so lighter, smaller garments aren’t hidden by parkas.  If your closet is very small, remove out-of-season clothing and store it in your bedroom closet. For optimal organization, you may want to investigate closet storage systems which provide rods, racks, and shelves in every imaginable configuration.  Building a new house, or just need an expert?
